About Switzerland

Switzerland, in its full name the Swiss Confederation (Latin: Confoederatio Helvetica, hence its abbreviation CH), is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons, with Bern as the seat of the federal authorities. The country is situated in Western Europe, where it is bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east.

Switzerland is a landlocked country geographically divided between the Alps, the Swiss Plateau and the Jura, spanning an area of 41,285 km2 (15,940 sq mi). While the Alps occupy the greater part of the territory, the Swiss population of approximately 8 million people is concentrated mostly on the Plateau, where the largest cities are to be found.

Among them are the two global cities and economic centres of Zurich and Geneva.

The Swiss Confederation has a long history of armed neutrality—it has not been in a state of war internationally since 1815—and did not join the United Nations until 2002. It pursues, however, an active foreign policy and is frequently involved in peace-building processes around the world. Switzerland is also the birthplace of the Red Cross and home to a large number of international organizations, including the second largest UN office. On the European level, it is a founding member of the European Free Trade Association and is part of the Schengen Area – although it is notably not a member of the European Union, nor the European Economic Area.

About Lausanne

The city of Lausanne, located by the Lake Geneva (62 km/39 mi northeast of Geneva), is the capital city of the French-speaking canton de Vaud, in Switzerland.
Its streets lined with trees and its numerous parks caused it to be called a “city in the countryside”.

The headquarters of the International Olympic Committee are located in Lausanne – the IOC officially recognises the city as the Olympic Capital –, as are the headquarters of the Court of Arbitration for Sport. There are 55 International Federations, including World Archery and sport related organisations in canton de Vaud.

The Béjart Ballet Lausanne, the Chaplin’s World museum (only a few kilometres away on the road to Vevey) as well as the Lavaux vineyard (registered by UNESCO as human heritage) set an interesting multicultural and variegated offer.

On the Cité hill, you can see the cathedral from the 12th century over the old part of the town, which is well-known as one of the most beautiful Gothic style monuments in Switzerland.

The cultural life is full of numerous sport, music and gastronomic events, and with shows and exhibitions that take place in more than 20 big museums and many more small galleries.

The neighbourhood of Flon, which is the heart of the new life of Lausanne with boutiques, restaurants and clubs, will liven up your shopping days and unbridled evenings.

Ouchy, on the shore of the Lake Geneva, is also a centre of activity in Lausanne. It is filled with an atmosphere of holidays and good living all year long.

For bathing enthusiasts, Bellerive-plage and the Renens swimming pool will surprise you with a variety of activities and a charming setting.

The currency in Switzerland is Swiss franc, usually indicated as CHF. However, you will be able to use Euro in most of the places.
